My name is Kevin Xiao and I’m the Founder and Head Tutor at Breakthrough Education. My passion and focus in life is to inspire, mentor and most importantly help students achieve success – whether it is to attain their ideal ATAR score in VCE or to get into the course of their dreams.
In my 23 years of teaching, I have personally coached and mentored more than 90 × 99.95 students and literally helped hundreds get into medicine, dentistry and even entry into some of the most prestigious universities in the US and UK.

Work Hard
Wondering how hard you need to work? The answer is simple: work harder than your peers.
The ATAR is a RANK, not a score and if you want to rank higher, you have to work harder.
Working hard means more hours, more effort and ultimately sustained output over time. Some may argue that quality is better than quantity.
Let me say to you this: quality comes from quantity.
Work Smart
Why is it that some students just perform better than others even though both seemingly spend the same amount of time?
The answer is straightforward: they spend the vast majority of time working on the factors which contribute most to their success. Getting a good ATAR is a science not an art, there are simple actions and tasks which will help you succeed.
Be Expertly Guided
Next time you meet someone who gets a great score, casually ask them if they got tutored?
The reality is that most, if not all, of the 99.95 have been coached just like elite athletes.
In fact, of all the years I have been teaching, those who get 99.95 without any coaching is in fact the exception.
In 2019 alone, I personally taught all 10 x 99.95 students – to do well you need someone who has a proven track record and experience in producing results year in, year out.
This was not a one off, in 2022, another 10 students, from Breakthrough Education, achieved a perfect ATAR of 99.95.
In 2024, 11 students achieved a perfect ATAR of 99.95 all from Breakthrough Education!

Frequently asked questions
1. Can I do a trial lesson?
Unfortunately, we do not accept trial lessons at Breakthrough Education (BT) – whether it is paid or unpaid. This is to ensure that our quality of teaching is maintained at a very high standard – we strive to ensure that disruptions to our existing students are minimised.
2. What are the prices for the tuition?
Prices vary with different subjects at Breakthrough Education. Please refer to our pricing page for more information
2025 Price Guide for classes:
VCE (subject dependent): $40 – $60 per hour
IB: $80 – $120 per hour
Year 5-10: $40 per hour
Scholarship & Selective Program: $40 per hour
2025 Individual prices:
VCE & IB: $80 – $150 per hour
Year 7-10: $60 – $90 per hour
Scholarship & Selective Program: $60 – $90 per hour
Assessments, materials and exam packs are charged in addition to classes per term
3. Can I join in mid-term once classes have started?
Classes are often filled up very quickly at the start of the year so make sure to register as soon as you can to secure a spot. If you were successful in getting a place after classes commenced, Breakthrough Education will require students to attend some catch up classes on the challenging and critical topics covered in the previous lessons missed.
4. How large are your class sizes?
Breakthrough Education offers exceptional group classes taught by our Head Tutor Kevin Xiao. Class sizes are usually limited to around 30 students.
If one-on-one tuition is preferred, please speak to the BT team to see which tutor is available. Our team of tutors consists of experienced VCE teachers, assessors and past students.
5. Does Breakthrough Education Offer 1 to 1 Tuition?
Breakthrough Education Offers 1 to 1 tutoring in the following areas:
VCE: Maths, English, Science, Commerce & Language (Latin only)
IB: Maths SL, HL & Chemistry SL, HL
Year 5-10: Maths, English, Science & Scholarship/Selective
We do not offer one to one tutoring for UCAT.
